Assumptions & caveats

- Total is capped at two years' basic salary.
- DIFC employees accrue under DEWS instead of a statutory gratuity.
Legal references — Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021
- Gratuity: Art. 51 — 21 days/yr for years 1–5; 30 days/yr beyond; capped at 2 years' basic
- Minimum service: Art. 51 — 1 year
- Notice: Art. 43 — 30–90 days; unserved notice is deducted from the final settlement, not the gratuity
- Forfeiture: Art. 44 — gross misconduct
A gratuity is an employer obligation, not a protected or invested pension — no inflation protection, and at risk if the employer becomes insolvent. The final figure depends on your contract and last wage; unpaid leave can reduce your service length.
This is one pension in isolation.

Frequently asked questions
- How is end-of-service gratuity calculated in the UAE?
- Under the 2022 Labour Law you earn 21 days of basic salary for each of the first five years and 30 days for each year beyond five, based on your basic salary only (allowances excluded), capped at two years' salary. At least one year of service is required.
- Does resignation reduce my gratuity in Saudi Arabia?
- Yes. On resignation you receive nothing under two years, one third from two to five years, two thirds from five to ten years, and the full award at ten years or more. On termination or contract end you receive the full award.
- How does resignation affect gratuity in Kuwait?
- Kuwait uses a 26-day working month: 15 days of basic pay per year for the first five years, then a full month per year beyond five, capped at 18 months. On resignation you receive nothing under three years, half from three to five years, two thirds from five to ten years, and the full indemnity at ten years or more.
- What changed for Bahrain gratuity in 2024?
- Since 1 March 2024, end-of-service benefits for expatriate workers in Bahrain are funded by monthly employer contributions to the Social Insurance Organisation (SIO) rather than a lump sum from the employer. Service before that date stays an employer-paid lump sum under Article 116; service from that date is claimed through the SIO. This calculator shows both the total entitlement and how it splits between the two.
- Which Oman gratuity law applies to me?
- Royal Decree 53/2023 (in force 31 July 2023) replaced the 2003 law. Service from that date earns one full month of basic salary per year from the first year. Earlier service keeps the old rate (15 days per year for the first three years, then a month per year). Many other calculators still use the repealed 2003 rates — this one applies the transitional split.
- Is a Gulf gratuity the same as a pension?
- No — a gratuity is a one-time, employer-funded lump sum, not an invested or inflation-protected pension. Your Gulf years typically build no ongoing state or occupational pension, which is why they're often called 'dark years' for retirement.
